Application of Botulinum Toxin in Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs)

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are multi-factorial and polysymptomatic pathologies their management must be customized for every patient. Numerous therapy techniques available to treat temporomandibular disorders-related muscular discomfort persistent orofacial pain. Botulinum toxin (BoNT) has emerged as a popular option patients with myofascial TMD who do not completely recover from condition after receiving conservative care medication. A systematic search of the literature, January 2000 until 1 April 2022, was performed in MEDLINE (PubMed), Web Science, Lilacs databases. The following terms combination: (temporomandibular disorders) OR (botulinum) (toxin) employed. total 357 articles were initially found electronic search. After screening, 11 full-text satisfied inclusion criteria. Cochrane risk bias tool (RoB 2) tool, which uses seven domains assess random sequence generation, allocation concealment, blinding participants personnel, outcome assessment self-reported outcomes, objective measures, incomplete data, selective reporting, other biases, employed analyze randomized controlled trials. aim this review trials is provide an overview use BoNT TMDs by comparing application therapeutic approaches. BoNT-A could help that respond treatments. Low doses recommended when considered pain related TMD. Future research should, however, conduct clinical stricter design. results confirmed more larger sample sizes, less bias, longer follow-up times.
